Everything you need to know about custom moulding

Custom moulding not only means you get the exact product you are looking for – in terms of shape, size and colour – but also ensures your commitment to the environment is met.

At Measom Freer, our custom moulding service puts you at the heart of the process. No matter what your business specialises in, we will design, develop and manufacture bespoke plastic products – so you don’t have to make any sacrifices on your vision.

Whether it’s the design, colour or capacity, we will meet your needs and requirements through our custom moulding services – with responsibly-sourced and recyclable thermoplastics.

We have two types of custom moulding available: blow moulding and injection moulding:

Blow moulding

Plastic blow moulding is a manufacturing process for forming hollow plastic parts like bottles and containers. Here at Measom Freer, we use extrusion blow moulding; a hot tube of plastic material – a parison – is dropped from an extruder and captured in a water-cooled mould.

Once the moulds are closed, air is injected through the top or the neck of the container – just as if one were blowing up a balloon. When the hot plastic material is blown up and touches the walls of the mould, the material "freezes" and the container now maintains its rigid shape.

One of the key benefits of blow moulding is that it can be used to manufacture complex shapes – something that can be of tremendous value for such things as product branding and identity. We utilise this process for capacities up to 2 litres and it is ideal for plastic bottles, containers and unusual items, like plastic bellows.

The majority of thermoplastics can be used for blow moulding, including:

  • Polyvinyl chloride – PVC
  • High density polyethylene – HDPE
  • Recycled high density polyethylene – rHDPE
  • Low density polyethylene – LDPE
  • Polyethylene terephthalate – PET
  • Bioplastics – biodegradable material derived from renewable sources
  • Recycled polypropylene plastic – rPP
  • Polypropylene plastic – PP
  • High impact polystyrene – HIPS

Injection moulding

Plastic injection moulding is the process of melting plastic pellets (thermosetting/ thermoplastic polymers) that, once malleable enough, are injected at pressure into a mould cavity, which fills and solidifies to produce solid parts like caps and measuring scoops. This process can be used with most recyclable thermoplastic materials, up to a shot weight of approximately 350g. Injection moulding is able to produce large volumes of quality parts at a high rate of speed and with accuracy.

How does custom moulding work?

Our design department at Measom Freer features the most up-to-date computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), used for component design, and we continually invest in cutting edge computer numerical control (CNC) technology to be as creative and innovative as possible.

We also have 3D visualisation and modelling available so you can see the designs from start to finish. In some cases, we are also able to manufacture prototypes of your chosen design – so you can see if there are any changes you want to make before full production – ensuring the end product is exactly what you want.

Our bespoke service adheres to strict confidentiality at all stages, ensuring all products fit perfectly into your business and our production runs 24 hours a day – resulting in maximum output at economical prices. And, with our own in-house tool room, our manufacturing procedures are certified to Quality Standard BS ISO9001: 2015 (Certificate No. FM 13440) and Environmental Standard BS ISO14001: 2015 (Certificate No. ES 675539)
